A maternity home is much more than a birthing centre as it aims to offer wholistic, multidisciplinary, collaborative, and customized services that go beyond birthing babies. It’s deliberately created as a home and not as a centre or a clinic or a hospital to give the natural feel for families and a wide variety of professionals to care for mothers. For Florence Maternity Home, we took a 1950’s mid-century modern style home and fully renovated it to create a modern and bright 2500 square foot space with 5 spacious en-suite bedrooms, a large kitchen, a movement area, and outdoor spaces.
What amenities do you have?
Our Home has 5 spacious bedrooms, each with an attached bathroom, a queen-sized bed, a window, a television, and an easy chair. Two of our bedrooms also have space to accommodate an inflatable birthing pool. There is a communal kitchen, an outdoor patio, and a fenced backyard. There is a movement area with a treadmill and other exercise equipment.

Our address is4801 48 Avenue, St. Paul, Alberta, Canada, T0A 3A3. We are in a residential area, directly across from the St. Therese St. Paul Healthcare Centre.
Who can use Florence Maternity Home?
It is open to all women who would have engaged the services of any of the professionals who have privileges with us. All services would have been pre planned with the help of the attending professional and pre booking for the use of the home would have been made. Risk assessment and suitability would have been conducted by the attending professional prior to booking.
What type of services do you provide?
We offer wholistic, multidisciplinary, collaborative, and customized services that go beyond birthing babies. Engaging the services of Midwives, Doctors, Doulas, Nutritionists, Lactation Consultants, Birth trauma specialists and of course, the mother’s partner, family and friends during pregnancy, labour, delivery and after delivery for up to a week.
What does it cost?
Midwives and Doctors delivering babies are compensated by Alberta Health Services. However, the cost of using the Florence Maternity Home facilities is not covered by AHS and is the responsibility of the family. The cost will be discussed depending on the packages chosen by the Mom. The payment options are also customized.
Is my stay covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans do not cover the costs associated with using a Maternity Home. Check with your insurance provider for clarification.
What type of pain management options do you offer?
Mostly natural methods with the support of families, friends, midwives and doulas.
What happens if I need a c-section or other support from the hospital including epidural analgesia?
You will be transported to the St. Paul hospital across the street. We have a good relationship with hospital staff and doctors.
Who are your staff?
Our Home is staffed by Midwives, Nurses, and support staff. Florence Maternity Home is founded and owned by Dr. Florence Akindele of Florence Akindele Professional Corporation. She has over 30 years of experience as a doctor and over 20 years as an Obstetrician/Gynaecologist. She has delivered over 2000 babies at the St. Therese health care centre since December 2009. She also holds a Masters degree in Public Health and has worked in various aspects of women's health in Nigeria, Swaziland, South Africa, and now Alberta, Canada. She is a loving mother of four and grandmother of six.
The team at Florence Maternity Home includes Natasha Chapdelaine, RN since 2021, ChrystalBrodziak RN - Lactation Consultant, and Richel Brousseau RN- Trauma Recovery Specialist.
How long should I expect to stay?
Stays range from 12hours to 3 days to 1 week depending on the choice of the Mom. We want mothers and babies to go home feeling healthy, safe and supported.
Are meals provided?
Meals would be pre arranged either from family and friends or our local restaurants. There is also a kitchen where meals can be made within the facility.
Can I tour the Home?
Yes. We encourage avirtual tour through our website. Moms who are being attended to by any of our professionals would have access to a physical tour during the prenatal period.
How do I book?
We know you can't predict exactly when your little one will decide to make an arrival. Detailed plans to welcome you into the home will be made with you by your attending professional or another member of the team.
Can my partner/family stay with me?
Your partner or support person is welcome to stay overnight with you. Older children, extended family and friends are welcome to visit as well depending on the new Mom’s wishes.
What should I bring?
This will be discussed extensively during your prenatal care period when your birth plan is created.
What are your hours?
Babies are welcome anytime!
What is the parking situation?
We have 5 parking spaces in the driveway, 2 parking spaces by the garage in the back alley, and several parking spaces on the street in front of and by the side of the house. Please obey all posted signs and municipal traffic laws.
